Treating addiction can be a brutal process, especially if you are a long-time user. But there’s always hope. One way that doctors have found effective at treating opioid addiction is through medication-assisted treatment, particularly suboxone treatment. Suboxone is a combination medicine that incorporates buprenorphine and naloxone, bringing in benefits from each. Since 2002 (when it was approved by the FDA), it has helped many patients relieve their withdrawal symptoms, allowing them to overcome their opioid addiction overall. Hope Centers of Central Florida is proud to be a suboxone clinic that has helped many patients throughout the Orlando area find a drug-free future.
What Is Medication-Assisted Treatment?
So what is medication-assisted treatment and how does it work? There are two parts: the first, is the medication, which is designed to relieve withdrawal symptoms. Often, doctors prescribe suboxone treatment to patients with less severe symptoms, but methadone or buprenorphine can also be suggested. Your doctor will help you determine which treatment is right for you. Medication alone, however, is not enough. Medication-assisted treatment is also supplemented with psychosocial services to help support you through the rehabilitation process. These can include anything from individual and/or group counselling, to even spiritual counselling.
What To Expect From A Suboxone Clinic
Though every person’s road to recovery is different, there is a typical outline that is followed. First, you will start with a general intake process, where your doctor will evaluate your current health and symptoms, and help you create a plan for treatment. Then it is time for the prescription. Suboxone has grown in popularity because, as a combination medicine, it draws benefits from multiple medications that make it so effective. For example, while other prescriptions must be taken at a clinic on a strict schedule, suboxone allows you to take it at home. It also deters misuse by those who may want to try and inject suboxone instead of taking it as directed, by inducing uncomfortable symptoms when not taken correctly. The naloxone in suboxone also negates the effects of other opioids, discouraging the use of opioids altogether (while taking your medication). Because of all this, doctors have found suboxone extremely effective in building healthy coping mechanisms. However, some patients do need stricter medication, so your doctor will help determine if suboxone is enough for you, or if you need something different.
Once you have your prescription and treatment plan, simply follow your doctor’s instruction and attend the prescribed therapy to help you through the process with ample support. It is recommended that patients continue their medication-assisted treatment for at least a year, but many go on for much longer. The process is different for everyone.
