Dr. Ganjam: Setting The Standard For Substance Abuse Treatment

by | Feb 3, 2020 | Opioid Treatment

Addiction is a powerful disease and requires experienced, qualified, and dedicated help. This is why AdventHealth, the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office, and Seminole County EMS/Fire Rescue and the Board of County Commissioners are launching a unique partnership to fight the opioid epidemic in their area. A key element of this collaboration is a new addictions recovery center in Sanford geared to provide clinically supported residential substance abuse treatment when it opens in early 2020. It marks the first time in the state of Florida that a health care system and law enforcement are coming together to open such a facility. This is a mission that Hope Centers of Central Florida has been committed to for years, and our current medical director Dr. Ganjam is going to be part of this effort through serving as the medical director of the new addiction recovery center. Read on to learn about how Dr. Ganjam’s efforts will spearhead substance abuse treatment in Florida and the details of this partnership between the state and private sectors. About The Recovery Center

The partnership effort will be the new model for using medically based treatment to assist those who have substance abuse problems in order to break the cycle of “catch, treat, release” which unfortunately defines opioid addiction. Expanding addiction treatment in the region will not only make sure that people will get the care and support they need after leaving the hospital, but will help to set them up for continued success later on. When it is fully operational, the addictions recovery center will eventually house up to 40 men and 10 women and will provide up to 30 days of overnight care. Along with mental health and medication assisted treatment, patients will be supported with services which address their educational, vocational, behavioral, and housing needs following discharge.

Substance Abuse Treatment

Dr. Ganjam from Hope Centers of Central Florida is dedicated to providing opioid treatment for the community. Central Florida is a clear reflection of the opioid crisis which has plagued the U.S. Over 47,000 deaths involving opioids were reported in 2017, according to the CDC, which is a 45 percent increase from 2016. The Sheriff’s Office reports that around 650 people in Seminole County overdosed on opioids, and 82 of them died, in 2018- a third more deaths than two years previous. With this new partnership Dr. Ganjam aims to navigate care for patients who need addictions treatment. A substance abuse coordinator will track patients during their inpatient stay at the hospital, and then for 30 days following discharge, in order to make sure that they are successfully connected with the appropriate treatment and  community resources. Moreover, the Sheriff’s Office will be giving opioid-abuse training and education to ER staff at AdventHealth Altamonte Springs. As a result of this training, first-responders
